My 85th Birthday

Dear Beloved Friend,

On January 21, 2011, God will bless me with my 85th birthday.

Since I have been studying meditation, one of the Truths I have learned is that, without God, life is like a school without a teacher; it is like a wire without current passing through it; it is like a body without a soul.

God is in us, around us, and beyond us. Just as the air is imperceptible in the absence of breezes, so God too can be known only by His manifestations: man and beast, plant and bird, the magnificent creation He has brought into being all around us.

It is such a good feeling to take time to meditate on these Truths, and then try to live them every day of my life. I don't waste time speculating what might happen in this New Year, my 85th year. If I obey these teachings, God will cause everything to work absolutely right.

Once you develop Love, there can be no room for evil qualities like anger or jealousy.

Please pray for me for another year of service in God's behalf. I will continue to offer my prayers for you in my meditations and in my sadhana.

Let us all pray for the peace and prosperity of the entire world. Peace can be attained only through practice of these Truths.

My Last Sermon

Dear Beloved Friends,

This is to inform you that on Sunday, October 31st, I will preach my last sermon as the temporary pulpit supply at the Church of the Master, the Presbyterian Church that I pastored and served for over 50 years. It’s difficult to think of all the things that have gone through my mind during the last few months.

Some of you know that from April 5th-July 18th, 2010 I was in the hospital recuperating from a major operation in my hip and a disturbing upset in my stomach. I returned to Church of the Master in August and it’s been a pleasure to be in the pulpit. It’s been a wonderful opportunity not only to be God’s servant in the pulpit, but also helping young and old work through personal struggles with the power of the Spirit. God’s spirit has moved from heart to heart and from breast to breast.

It’s been a pleasure growing and loving each one of you and helping you get closer to one another in understanding and mutual appreciation.

These four months have been very helpful in my own spiritual development. At one time the doctors told me that they were concerned about my being because my liver was seriously affected by this illness. I remember many dreams and visions. It was a tremendous experience because I became much more aware of God’s presence and leadership in my life. I learned, I changed, and I grew.

Now it’s time in my public service and church service to officially retire. I’ll always feel a part of the congregation and all of the lives of all my friends and partners in my church family, my Siddha Yoga family, and everyone else who has supported me over the years.

I know now that everything in life is temporary and not the way its always going to be. I thank God for I realize God is a river of peace that flows through me. I thank God that life is good, no matter what is going on.

Today I realize and share with you the miracle of life that I am. And I choose to live my live as that diving expression—fully, freely, and fantastically.

Speaking to Kids about MLK

Last week I went to New Jersey and spoke with elementary school-aged children about my experiences working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. What struck me about these children was the depth of their questions and how truly concerned they are about humankind.

Thanksgiving Blessing 2009

*Dr. Callender prepared this sermon initially for St. John Divine Episcopal Church, of New York City, which is the largest Protestant cathedral in the United States. The original presentation of this sermon was during the Vietnam War. He has since updated this sermon and this presentation represents his basic cardinal belief that "Everybody is a Somebody."
Dear Friends,

I heard from Dean Howards-Thurman about a professor who found himself in a faculty-split over a hard issue involving a colleague. Eventually, the Trustees became in involved. At last the faculty had to take positions--pro and con. This professor took a positive stand that made him become unpopular with his colleagues, and next fall he was teaching somewhere else. As Dr. Thurman was telling me this story, he said, "Gene for the first time in my life, I was a man. I could not hedge. I took sides according to my convicitons. I became a new person, way down deep."

When the French artist, Henry Matisse, was a young man, he went through a period where he painted still-lifes in an uninspired and academic style. He found a dealer who would buy those painting for 400 francs apiece. Matisse was married and had three children and this kind of work provided a livelihood. One day came a moment of decision. Matisses says, "I had just finished one of these pictures. It was as good as the previous one. I knew that on delivery, I would get the money I really needed. There was tempation to deliver it, but I knew that if I yielded, it would be my artistic death. Looking back, I realize that it required courage to destroy that picture, particularly since the hands of the butcher and the baker were outstretched for the money. But I did destroy it. I count my emancipation from that day."

When a person decides he will not subvert his talents for any foundation grant, or compromise his integrity to keep a job, or play it safe just to stay in the game, there comes a wonderful sense that he stands for something. That he is a somebody, not a nobody.

One With It

Dear Friends,

What are you one with? Are you one with love, abundance, joy and beauty? Or are you one with fear, lack, limitation? Whatever you align your life with, and become one with, will become your life experience.

You are here by Divine decree to manifest your life in all it's glory. Whatever you declare yourself "One With," will manifest in your life. If you declare yourself One with God, you set up a vibrational field to become an attractive being for the all good of God. Watch your mind and see what you are allowing to be one with.

What thoughts are driving your life? Does your daily mind chatter consist of blame and fear? Or can you continuously focus your thoughts on creativity and love?

Know that there is only one Mind, one Life, and that we are all connected to that "One" creative intelligence. Finding Fulfillment

I will deal with the transformation of the life of a young man who was obviously deeply disturbed. You may want to read the story in the 8th chapter in the book of Luke (in the New Testament), especially the 38th and 39th verses.

Finding Fulfillment

Many of us, on this planet, are continuously seeking a sense of fulfillment. If the attempt to feel fulfilled comes from grasping for things in the external world, disappointment often results. If we feel incomplete within ourselves, no amount of "feeding the empty hole" will fill us enough to experience true "wholeness." If, on the other hand, we are able to lift ourselves out of the rat race of acquisition and possession, we may choose to stop and enter the inner domain of true bounty. It is when we are able to tap into the sacred silence that we recognize we are already "perfect, whole, and complete." Therefore, there is really nothing outside ourselves that we need. This concept may seem like "airy-fairy" spiritual jargon, but it is actually the truth.

When we remember that we are already whole, divine beings, we feel imbued with the energy of the cosmos. From this point of awareness, we know that we are so rich, so loving, and so joyous that we can "give from the overflow" of our own bountiful essence. No longer do we, consciously or unconsciously, resort to stingy behavior; nor do we need to protect ourselves from some perceived threat. Now, we can know that we are magnificant emanations of spirit, so amazingly abundant in every way, that assisting others is a natural way of being for us. When we live our lives motivated by "generosity of spirit" we open our hearts to allow our divine gifts to flow freely and easily to help others. Then we can offer a warm smile or a gentle embrace as a way of giving love in a world that really needs it. What a wonderful way to find our own fulfillment!

Recently, President Obama has been talking about the stimulus package, economic development, health care and a number of other issues that he raised in his campaign that he'd like to see translated into national policy. Let me ask you a question, "Have you taken advantage of your spiritual stimulus package?" As we enter into the last quarter of 2009, now is the ideal time to check in with yourself and introspect on whether you've been open and receptive to all the spiritual stimulus the Spirit freely offers you!

Have you been available to the subtle workings of your inner self? Open to catching the Spirit's vision for your life, even if it's seemingly the smallest details? Since there is no big or small in the mind of God, it is up to each of us to deepen our awareness, our self-witnessing skills, so that we can catch even the subtle ways the Spirit is constantly transmitting hints on ways we must refine our consciousness to reflect it's nature within us.

As an individual expression of a cosmic good, you are in a constant state of unfolding the divine potential within you. This unfoldment is further stimulated by your conscious awareness of it, and even more so, by your application of the spiritual tools of meditation, of affirmative prayer, spiritual study, service and fellowship.

Each and every day we are provided stimulus to cultivate our consciousness. Even amidst the crash of breaking worlds--or economic crisis--that which we are within cannot be taken away. The joy, peace, love, intelligence, bliss, creativity--nothing can diminish our Essential Self. Lean into this truth, affirm it, and above all, practice it.

I'd like you to know that Love is a dangerous thing. It is dangerous because no matter how many times someone hurts you, they cannot stop you from loving them. No matter how many times someone refuses to acknowledge you, they cannot touch the persistent innocence within you that forgives them. Love is a dangerous thing. It sees through the subtle subterfuges of hatred and manipulation and strikes a match of transformation. It strikes a match of ingenuity. It strikes a match of total trust. It strikes a match that illuminates the unseen presence of God everywhere. When that tiny flicker of light hits a hurting heart, it reveals the kernel of healing already within. Love is a dangerous thing. Too bad we don't use it more often.

Tribute to Billie Holiday

Please join me this Sunday, July 26th at Church of the Master (122nd & Morningside Avenue, Harlem, NY) at 10:00 am.*

This is a very special service for me and nothing would please me more than to share it with my friends like you.

It will be unusual for a Sunday service, but I know it will be received well by those who are present. The basis for this special service is the fact that on July 17, 1959, I was standing in Billie Holiday's room at Metropolitan Hospital. She was under police guard as she began her last journey, traveling all alone. Her death was more than a conclusion of a troubled individual life. For me, it was the end of something that has not completely returned to American music or American life. A few days later, I was asked to deliver her eulogy at her funeral.

We know that the inevitable face of death makes all lives tragic, but Billie was special to our time, our condescending pity. The pity is helped into place by how grace, class, sex and politics are used to belittle even those whose lives have been enhanced by superior talent.

We are hearing so much these days about, and a lot of whining, about how terrible a life Billie Holiday lived, because she was a black woman with a 5th grade education and she was a drug addict. As a singer, she seemed to enjoy telling the tales of degradation that went with the troubles of race and drugs. But neither had as much to do with her talent or her artistry as many would like to delude themselves into believing. Holiday singing is what made her special to herself and special to her listeners who enjoyed treating her like royalty.

Billie Holiday was so unique, in every way, that it is ridiculous to pretend that she can be completely explained by her color, her gender, her sparse education or any of the other definitions or limits that are supposed to tell us what we need to know. There is no better example than her singing--her sound odd, her voice small, her range narrow. Still, she polished to a charismatic gloss her singular skill at expressing emotions so intimate and so pure that few have the nerve to try to reach them or even reach for them.

Billie Holiday was not a loud singer, and there is no vulgarity in her work. There was nothing cheap or obvious about her art. She brought a harsh and vulnerable dignity to sorrow, but was far from lacking in the charmed delivered by unsentimental joy. Holiday was a woman who entered her 40's, who knew what had happened to her, what she had to do with it, and audibly revels in how great a gift she had received. Whatever she might have been any place else, was transcended when the singer took the stage.

I love you, Billie, deeply. I miss you, Billie, mightily. God Bless You Child-You had your own.

At the service on Sunday, Dwayne Grayman will sing that great piece of Billie's, "God Bless the Child that Got His Own" and maybe a few others.

After the Guru Gita at the Manh. ashram a group of us went to see Eugene Callender conduct Easter Services at the Church of The Master, the church Eugene became the preacher at 50 years ago this year. We bathed in the blessed energy of Jesus Christ Ananda which Eugene and the wonderful congregation at Church of the Master did so much to facilitate.

There was a lot of Shakti as the celebration was full of love and devotion. Eugene gave an amazing sermon that was a beautiful and loving merging of Christianity and Siddha Yoga using the words of Christianity. As always when I've gone there, everyone showered us with the Pure Welcome.

I send you some pics of the day. if anyone doen't know how to open a zip file, just download it to your computer, click on it and it will open a folder. The only pics that aren't pretty much self-explanatory are they had 3 troupes of dancers who danced and mimed words to the hymns. They danced with a lot of pizzaz and devotion. One was adults, one was kids and one were seniors. You can see which one the pic is.

The other is a pic of James Robinson, the preacher who brought Eugene to the C of M in 1959. Like Eugene, Robinson was a Civil Rights Icon and Eugene became the preacher one year later when Robinson left to do great work in Africa which he did until he passed less than 10 years afterwards.

Palm & Easter Sundays

It's nearly Easter and I realize that much time has passed since my last correspondence. Please know that all has been well here! I turned 83 in January the day after Barrack Obama was sworn in as president of the United States of America. I had the privilege of traveling to our nation's capital and sat outside with millions of people as I watched, with my very eyes, a spectacle like none other. I feel truly blessed.

For the past few months, we have been working feverishly to launch my virtual ministry called "Positively Eugene." This will take shape in the form of monthly teleseminars on topics that face our world today (religion, spirituality, education, politics, families, and more) and weekly audio broadcasts. Please look for more information about this ministry in the coming weeks.

I hope you'll join me at Church of the Master for Palm Sunday on Sunday, April 5th. The sermon topic "The Lord Hath Need of Him."

The year is drawing close. Meister Eckhart once said, "If the only prayer you say in your whole life is "thank you" that will be enough.

This is the time of the year when we find it much easier to say "thank you" than any other time. This time, when the world is coming into shadow, we say "thank you" and somehow we feel better. The sense of gratitude that we cultivate brings into deeper knowing into the spirit from within. It allows us to face the darkness of winter and the darkness of our lives, lives that may be broken by the shattering of our dreams and the failing of our faith. But when we say "thank you" and we become aware of the love of divine spirit we begin to feel that gratitude is heaven itself. Let our lives be filled with gratitude. The gifts of divine spirit are so wonderful and we know our live is blessed. Thank you.

Not your God or my God, for God doesn't take sides or play favorites. It's the God of the universe. The created life force that sustains all of us...eastern teachers talk about the inner self. That is the house that has been made in the image of the creator. That out of lightness, we call God. That inner house shall never fall. For the joy of peace can be found within. The joy of peace can be sustained within and maintained by love. Let us share it with each other. And if we do that, it will expand and extend its power within us and hopefully in our perception of the world.

See With Your Spiritual Eyes

Dear Friends,

Each day is a new day where in new and beautiful things are always being created. There is a gorgeous power in the wonder of creation that is always taking place. If we can move our eyes from the distractions of so much of the things that complicate our vision, we will see that there are always opportunities. Just as the sun is always in the eastern sky, so God is always with us.

How can we take our eyes off the material universe and see the world that God created if we keep our eyes only on the material world? Perhaps the answer to this question lies in what we are using to see. If you look only with our physical eyes to see, you will see only that which is physical. If by prayer and meditation, we can train ourselves to see with our spiritual eyes, we can see beyond the physical and we will actually be seeing with our hearts.

What God created is good. And God is good. All that God has created is good. The heart of love only sees love. Begin to see with the heart. And you can then see the good that God has created.

The Season of Advent

Dear Friends,

For the next few weeks, as a community of spiritual people, we will be celebrating the liturgical season of advent. In this season, we hope to deepen our relationship with God and we hope that we can move our faith beyond doubt, although it may not move beyond questions.

God has made us as human beings, complete with puzzles and questions and pain. But it is also God who supports and sustains us of the goodness and the glory and the love of life. One thing that we do have - it comes to us very strongly during Advent - that believing in God makes a real difference in our lives. And we see that whatever weaknesses we may have, God's presence is there assuring us of our higher potentials and possibilities.

So let us spend some time over these next 4 weeks thinking about what is God's purpose for my life and how can I begin to approach accomplishing that purpose.

I See God

As we enter the month that celebrates the freedom of America, I wonder how many of us "let freedom ring" in our own lives. In truth, most of us vascilate between remembering and forgetting our own egoless nature.

The point is to catch this process as it occurs and practice, practice, practice until we can join the chorus of those who sing "free at last, free at last, free at last."
